Venezuela is experiencing run away inflation that was estimated to have increased a staggering 1.3 million percent last year. Local woman Marta Gonzalez watched the price of a loaf of bread rise 920% in the time it took the grocer to ring it up. Luckily for her, the cost is rising so quickly that stores don’t have time to keep up on an intraday basis, so they reset prices at the end of each day.
It was pointed out to Marta that if she bought the same loaf of bread tomorrow, it will have risen an average of 3,560%. “When I think about it that way, I guess I’m glad that I was so incredibly hungry today.”
At the time of press, Lola Hernandez, wife of a wealthy local businessman, was using the same data to justify a shoe shopping spree, “If I don’t buy all of these shoes today, just think how much more they’ll cost tomorrow.”
